I’m a cellist from South Wales, and I began my performance studies at Wells Cathedral School (2015–2017) with Penny Driver, where I was a specialist music scholar. I continued on to study for a Bachelor of Music (BMus) at the Royal Academy of Music (2017–2021), studying modern cello with Hannah Roberts and John Myerscough, and historical cello with Jo Crouch and Jonathan Manson. I completed my degree as a historical cellist. After the Academy, I went on to complete a Master of Music (MMus) at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2021–2023) under the guidance of Viola de Hoog.
In 2022–2023, I was a Samama Fellow with Holland Baroque, performing in concerts, recordings, and outreach programs. I’m currently part of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s Young Artist Scheme for the 2024–2025 season.
My orchestral journey began when I was invited by Rachel Podger to play in the Brecon Baroque Festival Orchestra at the age of 9. Since then, I’ve performed across Europe with ensembles including Brecon Baroque, Holland Baroque, Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, La Sorpresa, Academy of Ancient Music, and La Sfera Armoniosa. I’ve served as principal cellist with Holland Baroque, La Sorpresa, and Dutch Baroque, as well as at the Brecon Baroque Festival for their performance of Vivaldi’s La Notte.
One of my main focuses is as the founder and director of Pont Baroque, an ensemble that has appeared in festivals including the Brecon Baroque Festival and Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht. As a soloist, I’ve performed Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major with my ensemble at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and I was honoured to open the Zutphen Cello Festival 2024 with a performance of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major. I’ll also be travelling to the USA for performances of C.P.E. Bach’s Cello Concerto in A minor.
My awards include a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, the Blodwen Cosslett Leyshon Prize, the Bickerdike Allen Prize (recommended by Head of Department Margaret Faultless), and the Ryan Davies Memorial Award. I currently play on a “Martin Dihl 176?” cello, generously loaned to me by the Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds. The cello has a beautiful warm character with a beautiful range of colours. It’s a cello that I’ve enjoyed exploring and has received nothing but compliments from friends and colleagues.
